Stephen Metcalfe MP presents awards to Karate Kids

Stephen Metcalfe MP with Marc Grayston and all the award winners

Stephen Metcalfe, local MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, recently had the privilege of presenting the awards at Maru Karate Kai’s end of year awards ceremony.

2012 overall was a fantastic year for Maru Karate Kai. Not only was lead instructor Marc Grayston-kyoshi a London 2012 Olympic torch bearer but the club secured funding from Basildon Council, the Ford Britain Trust and Sportivate in order to continue their great work. The focus of the evening however was entirely on the students and children who have worked hard throughout the year to improve their Karate.

Stephen Metcalfe, who is a proud patron of the club, commented: “I was delighted to be asked to present the awards at the ceremony. Having visited a number of times, I am familiar with their fantastic work and I would like to congratulate all students who were in attendance, and particularly those who won awards for their efforts and achievements.”

Mr Metcalfe presented awards to the student of the year, the best new comer and to the most improved fighter.

He added: “This was a great way to round up an extremely successful year and I would like to thank all those involved in the running of the club. Their hard work, dedication and skill are second to none and they provide an enthusiastic, safe and fun environment in which the students can learn and compete.”

“I very much look forward to seeing how Maru Karate Kai progress and would like to wish them every success for what I am sure will be a great 2013!”
