Stephen Metcalfe MP gets creative at The Laboratory launch

Stephen Metcalfe with Lisa Smith at the Laboratory

Stephen Metcalfe, local MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, enjoyed letting his creative side out at the launch of The Laboratory last Saturday.

Based in Wat Tyler Country Park, The Laboratory is a new art studio developed by local artist Lisa Smith which aims to provide a space for beginners and experienced artists to work and learn as well as a place for children to develop their skills after school.

A large number of visitors attended the launch to take part in the day’s activities including Mr Metcalfe who participated in the ‘Draw one Take one’ project. Mr Metcalfe’s drawing was taken home by a young boy who replaced it with his picture of five shells.

He commented: “The launch was a great success. The Laboratory provides a great space in which people of all ages can go and get creative in a friendly and relaxed environment. There are a number of classes and workshops coming up and I would encourage everyone to get involved!”

The Make and Matter group starts on Saturday and participants will learn how to make a craft item which they will then be encouraged to reproduce and donate to St Luke’s Hospice Shop to help raise vital funds.

Mr Metcalfe added: “The Make and Matter group is about art having impact in the community. It is an innovative way to raise money for the Hospice and I am sure everyone at St Luke’s will be extremely grateful for the donations.”

Other classes including Moshi Monsters, After School Art and adult beginner’s classes also start soon.  If you are interested in participating, email the_laboratory@hotmail.co.uk to book your space. Or for more information please visit: http://www.1thelaboratory.blogspot.co.uk/
