Stephen Metcalfe, local MP
for South Basildon and East Thurrock, has signed Early Day Motion (EDM) 1113 in
support of the Great British Switch campaign.
The Mirror has teamed up with price comparison website
comparethemarket.com to call on the energy giants to scrap pricey
penalty fees. Millions of families
on fixed price deals are prevented from switching to a new supplier by
hefty exit charges.
The Great British Switch is calling on
firms to waive the charges for one weekend, on March 15 and 16, freeing
customers to shop around find the best deal for them. The EDM signed by Mr
Metcalfe recognises that this is an extremely concenring issue for the public,
commends the campaign and calls on the public to
show their support on 15 and 16 March by taking advantage of the offer to
switch energy supplier without penalty.
Currently, the campaign is being
supported by EDF Energy and npower and it is hoped that other suppliers will
follow suit.
Mr Metcalfe commented: “It’s
time for all the Big Six to start opening up this dysfunctional market and free
consumers by supporting the Great British Switch. I hope that other suppliers
will join the campaign and offer the people in South Basildon and East Thurrock
a real choice.”
